Various attacks of native way of life by convicts, free landholders, Government acts and other European intervention has meant that at present much of the previous way of life of the Yugambeh is now forgotten. However, many are nonetheless energetic in attempted to protect what nonetheless remains, such as the Yugambeh language, and guaranteeing it’s handed on to future generations. Many of Lamington’s crops are found nowhere else on earth, such as the Mt Merino eyebright and Everlasting Daisy that are subalpine relics from the final ice age. In 2006 it was realised that an old collection of the jap underground orchid (Rhizanthella slateri) from Lamington was actually a separate species and has been described as the Lamington underground orchid (Rhizanthella omissa). This orchid, like the 2 different related species, has no chlorophyll and depends entirely upon a symbiotic fungus for survival. It is also one of only 4 flowering vegetation on Earth to complete its life cycle completely underground.
